Watched curse of the golden flower. Highly recommended. Zhang Yi mou is an expert at combining the best of hollywood and chinese sword fighting flicks even if that combination doesn't always work so well. For example i loathed Crounching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , finding it to be bland. Here however he uses the source material to great effect, creating opulent sets worthy even of the most radical interpretations. Noteworthy too was the script; itself engaging and lucid, one of my favourite lines being "wo yao bi ni shi" ( i want to force you to die) as said by the empress. No doubt it will win lots of awards but i can't help feeling as if it was made for hollywood. the imagery was grand, colorful and gratuitous but it hardly left a longing impression. The film held you through every twist and development and in that sense i wished there were more to it, more for the viewer to find. Rather than what it is , a grand and epic film that under the hood is really very simple, even if it is enjoyable.
something happened after that left an unplesant aftertaste. even if i did aggravate it. but i guess its just the way i'm wired to behave. the matter got bured so thats it i guess..
